Auburn is located 30 miles east of Sacramento and is known as "The Endurance capitol of the World." The reason for this is because of the 100 mile races between Auburn and Lake Tahoe either by horse and riders and or runners. Historic Auburn's Gold Rush heritage is reflected in the Auburn Wild West Stampede.
 
Outdoor recreation is a hallmark of Auburn with the Auburn State Recreation Area and the American River Canyon which offers horseback riding trails, trail hiking and guided nature trail hikes. While water rafting and kayaking, lake boating, river and lake fishing, mountain biking, and camping are easily accessible. Auburn is also the doorway to the Sierra Nevada foothills which offer skiing, hiking, camping and other outdoor activities.
